Why Do People Set Goals and Not Take Action?
Have you ever set a goal for the New Year, truly believing you would take action and then after a few weeks, realise you are not achieving them? Maybe this year you were determined to start a fitness program, spend more time with your family, book into a personal growth seminar or read some inspiring books. Why do people not follow through? It’s easy to think up excuses but what is the real reason and why is it so common?
Even very successful people can find themselves procrastinating on important action. To give you an example: the CEO of a finance company made a promise to himself that at the beginning of the New Year he was going to make 10 cold calls every week. When the time came for the first cold call, he was consumed by fear and could not do it. He had no idea why this was happening because he was a very successful and yet he realised he had even created a Marketing Department simply because he couldn’t call anyone he hadn’t previously spoken to.
This time he decided to seek some help and during the process of Matrix Therapies he discovered that the cause of his reaction had to do with his father. His father was very strict and critical and he grew up in an environment where it was unacceptable to make a mistake. He had to be perfect. So he was very reluctant to do anything which he could not do perfectly. Fortunately for him, he was talented and intelligent so he could do many things well, but it was also a trap because there were many things he wanted to have a go at but could bring himself to do.
Once the negative influence of his father was cleared, he was able to make phone calls to anyone and change many other limiting beliefs and behaviours. As you can imagine it had a major effect, not just on his career, but also on his personal life. Since then there has been a quantum leap in his success at work and he now runs a number of businesses and has numerous profitable investments. This man clearly illustrates how sometimes seemingly unrelated behaviours can be influenced by parents and how someone may not know the cause of their behaviours until they have an effective process to work with.

You needn’t slay the beast nor scale the entire mountain.
That’s not how it’s done. You only need to move through today.
Think of the distance you’ve already covered. Focus on your strengths.
Let every breath you take remind you of your power.
Seek out friends and guides, they’re anxious to help. You are not alone.
You’re understood. This road has been walked before.
Dance life’s dance, just a few steps at a time, and in the wink of an eye
You will wonder, to yourself; “What beast, what mountain?
Was I having a dream?”
